Websites in its simplistic form are great tools that provide information about a particular topic with some form of credibility and validity. One of the most important aspects about your website is the way people are able to engage and maneuver around your website. This becomes important when trying to search for information or even trying to persuade a purchase. If the website becomes too difficult to find information or perhaps having too much information, people will click off rendering your website useless or not at it’s fullest potential. A website must have a flow and allow the consumer to maneuver through the website efficiently to achieve desired results.
A concept to include to improve the flow of your website is to establish the goal of your website prior to creation. Is the website meant for lead generating? Direct sale? Asking this and determining the goal of the website help establish the flow. For example, a lead generating website would flow us in a way to ensure the customer goes on a journey through the website to end up them placing a lead, which in turn to a sale. To go about this, we must ensure there are “contact points” throughout the website that brings the customer towards our goal. Strategically placing “contact us” and various buttons alike will enhance the flow of your website and help it achieve the website ultimate goal.
An additional way to ensure that the flow of your website is optimal is to incorporate an information architecture. Which is the combination of organization, labelling, and navigation schemes constituting an information system. This structural design of an information space helps find the information you are looking for. Information architecture becomes more important for large scale websites rather than smaller scale websites. Information architectures serves almost the same function as the table of contents of a book. You result to the information architecture to find what information you are looking for.
When creating websites, not only must we keep in mind to have visually engaging components along with the valuable information we are attempting to spread, but we must also keep in mind the simplicity of finding this information. While maintain and designing the website towards our main goal. When a website becomes too clustered or is difficult to maneuver is when we lose sales as a business. By providing information architecture can we maintain people on our websites and overall enhance the user’s experience and improve the flow of your website.
